Sculpture by Dutch Schulze
Dutch began sculpting over 30 years ago, long before he became a glass-blower. He always creates his original models in clay, then uses the lost wax process to reproduce them in glass. Actually the glass he casts into sculpture is Crystal, which is different than that used for blowing glass, because of its excellent optical qualities. The Crystal sculptures seem to glow as if they had an inner light source. Dutch approaches sculpture in a traditional manner, which sets him apart from almost all other artists sculpting in glass. His subjects, which are usually the human form, are portrayed in a representational, if somewhat stylized manner. Dutch strives to create forms that will utilize the Crystal to its greatest advantage, capturing the light, but with an apparently soft surface. No one else creates work quite like this. |

Because Dutch uses the traditional lost wax method of creating his sculpture, he is able to reproduce his pieces as a limited edition. When a particular sculpture is sold, he plans to cast another until the edition is filled. Sometimes different colored Crystal is used, but this does not constitute a new edition. If you are interested in owning a sculpture that has been sold, please contact Dutch, and he will give your sculpture priority. Dutch does all the work himself in the Bandon Glass Studio,

Blown Glass by Dutch Schulze
Bandagios, Seaforms and Fluted Bowls are created from a basic blown glass form known as a Rondelle. Many layers of clear glass and selections of colored glass are formed into a bowl, and then spun on the end of a pipe into a flattened disc shape. This flattened disc shape allows for different design potential than the typical vessel form.

The Flowerscape Vase series is a new and exciting edition to Dutch's traditional flat-vase style. | | Jaffy Schulze
I began working with glass when I was seven. My Dad and Mom have been glass blowers as long as I can remember, so I had the opportunity available to work with glass and I still love it.
I take glassblowing classes whenever I get the chance and work in the family studio during breaks from my studies at Portland State.

Paper Weights
Paperweights have been made and collected for hundreds of years. Antique weights are beautiful, yet since the advent of the Studio Art Glass Movement in the 1960's there has been a proliferation of new artists and styles carrying this art form to a higher plane. Although the paperweight is solid glass, and everything in it is glass, it carries an illusion of weightlessness and impossible fragility. This characteristic makes it an ideal medium to portray underwater scenes. Due to the spherical nature of paperweights, they possess optical properties, such as the ability to magnify the objects in their interiors. Paperweights are great objects to place on your desk, they can mark your pending letters, but they're really great to stare into while you're talking on the phone.
